Keep your full-time job, but earn a bit on the side while generously sharing your expertise to strengthen progressive movements.
Social Movement Technologies’ mission is to provide organizing strategy, training and campaign support to build progressive power and win in the digital age. We're a non-profit movement support group, driven 100% to meet movement needs.
SMT’s small but highly effective team has trained staff from over 1800 groups and unions over its first six years, and worked with several dozen groups on campaigns more in-depth.
SMT is now playing a lead role in developing the in-depth digital campaign apprenticeship training that organizers, communications, fundraising and director-level staff need in the digital age. Our goal is to expand access by driving down the cost of this training and providing excellent online learning experiences to dramatically deepen digital organizing proficiency on the Left. Our focus is on using digital campaigning to amplify in-person action, broaden support, activate supporters, and pressure targets. Our bias is towards meeting the needs of small to medium-size groups.
Do you have deep experience and interest in occasional teaching or consults related to issue campaigns or union organizing? Here is the expertise we're looking for:
SMT does much of its work with a team of “Staff Partners” – long-term contractors who can work as little as a few hours a month to as many as 40 hours/month on a very flexible basis, though some availability during the workday is a must. Staff Partners are highly experienced online/offline organizers. As a Staff Partner you work from wherever you are and each work assignment is up to you to accept or not. Some of SMT’s Staff Partners have full-time jobs. In this case they have worked out an agreement with their employer to enable them to do a few hours of work on the side. Some are self-employed and may do other freelance work. Staff Partners are members of the Freelance Division of the Pacific Media Workers Guild – CWA. SMT has a highly experienced team with complementary skill sets. We seek to build on that. Hourly pay rate varies based on role on any particular job and experience. SMT has internal guidelines which we seek to apply fairly based on skill set, experience level and type of work being done.
How to apply: Please enter your area of expertise in the subject line. let us know where you heard about the position. Tell us about your relevant experience and provide links to samples of your online campaign work. This app only allows one doc upload, so please include a link to a folder of your campaign work or other documents at the bottom of your cover letter. Please indicate the minimum hourly rate you need. Although your hourly rate if hired will be consistent with our internal pay levels based on experience and type of work, we ask for this to avoid wasting time in case your minimum required pay is out of SMT’s range. A later step in the process will include a timed live exercise. We regret that we will not be able to acknowledge all applications in a personal way.
