This position is fully remote. You can be based anywhere in the world. You must be available during at least 6 EST work hours and must have excellent, reliable internet.

We're looking for someone who can make internal systems hum, working with the staff team. This position supports the rest of the team and groups we work with, including handling training registrations, responding to inquiries and help requests from groups, updating the website, invoicing, database updates, and a wide range of other projects.

This job is for you if...You’re excited about building people-power movements for racial and climate justice; you have lived experience with issues of racial justice so this fight is deeply personal for you; you love helping things run smoothly and efficiently and being of service to people requesting help...You have excellent attention to detail and deadlines, and thrive while juggling a variety of projects. You're excited about learning and diving into new tools, and find it pretty easy to get the hang of them. You are motivated to make the work of the team hum so that training participants and groups SMT supports have a great experience!

Social Movement Technologies’ mission is to provide organizing strategy, training and campaign support to build people-power for justice in the digital age. We're a non-profit movement support group, driven 100% to meet movement needs. We're super lean - we do lots with little, just like most of the groups we work with. Whether in North America or across the globe, increasingly SMT is training and working with groups working on racial and climate justice that need support to ramp up online.

SMT’s small but highly effective team has trained staff from over 3900 groups and unions over its first 9 years, and worked with 100+ groups on campaigns more in-depth.

SMT provides the in-depth digital campaign training that staff and activists need in the digital age. Our goal is to expand access by driving down the cost of this training and providing excellent online learning experiences to dramatically deepen digital organizing proficiency. Our focus is on using digital campaigning to amplify in-person action, broaden support, activate supporters, and pressure targets. Our bias is towards meeting the needs of small to medium-size groups.

Compensation and Hours. This is a full-time position, but can start part-time or freelance if that's better for you. If you have additional online campaigning skills and experience, you may be able to combine this position with campaign support work. Must be able to work during at least 6 normal EST work hours. SMT staff have free access to all trainings, so this is an excellent learning opportunity if that's important to you. Salary $45,000 - $60,000 /year if based in U.S., depending on location and experience. If based in a country with a lower cost of living, salary range is adjusted proportionally. Healthcare coverage, generous paid time off, retirement benefits.

Here are some examples of what you will do:

  • Lead training registration, operations, and everything it will take to make sure training participants have a successful experience
  • Help with a variety of outreach tasks using several tools
  • Run payments, billing and invoicing for the team
  • Manage edits to SMT's website
  • Respond to questions and inquiries by organizing groups
  • Help manage SMT's social media accounts so as to support movement groups and curate content of interest
  • Help onboard new team members, including on digital security protocols of the organization for example
  • Run special projects, coordinating team members as needed
  • Clean up data in spreadsheets
  • Other as needed

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Committed and experienced with movement work
  • Experience working with or in Black/brown-led groups
  • High attention to detail is a must!
  • Experienced in project management, understanding how to manage a team and break down deadlines etc.
  • Able to multi-task and juggle multiple projects and communicate reliably about them
  • Familiar with Action Network or quick study with experience using CRMs
  • Comfortable manipulating data in spreadsheets/uploading/downloading
  • Friendly and encouraging, and able to convey this via email, video conferencing and phone
  • Super interested in learning more and staying abreast of new developments
  • Able to schedule yourself reliably and attentive to deadlines
  • Interested in this for more than a year or two. This is not a short-term in-between kind of position.

How to apply: Tell us why the position seems like a good fit, and explain whether you prefer to start full- or part-time and how that meshes with your current situation. Share a list of tools you are proficient with. (You may be asked to demonstrate proficiency via screen share and an online exercise will be required.) If you have other work you'd like to share, include a link to a folder or other documents at the bottom of your cover letter since this app limits uploads. References will be requested at a later point. Position will be open until filled.

We regret that we will not be able to acknowledge all applications in a personal way, nor do we have the capacity to discuss with applicants before they apply. We greatly appreciate that time and care is invested in each of them.
